While
some family service providers are now trying to engage with fathers, and
some are working in piece-meal fashion to provide tangible support for
men as parents, funding is still a serious problem, and none of the policy
changes Sandy Ruxton and I called for have yet been implemented. Even
automatic Parental Responsibility for Unmarried Fathers (who now number
2 out of 5 fathers), though promised by the last government, fell for
lack of Parliamentary time, before the 2001 election.
